Gift from Dr. Helen Wessel

Written by Lynn Long. Posted in Foundation

We are gratified to announce a very generous donation of $21,000 from Dr. Helen M. Wessel in tribute to her mother-in-law, Bessie Hoover Wessel. Bessie Wessel was a distinguished early member of the Woman’s Art Club of Cincinnati, an instructor at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, a student of Frank Duveneck, and a noted Cincinnati artist with paintings in the collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Indiana Museum of Art.

An artist in her own right, Helen received a doctorate in Art Education at the University of Cincinnati, eventually becoming head of the department. Now a resident of Florida, she continues to to sew and create beautiful, richly colored textiles in her home studio and remains a strong advocate of art education for children and adults of all ages. (Thanks to www.carlsamson.com for biographical information about Dr. Wessel).
This gift will help further the Foundation’s goal of developing the Loft, the second story of the Barn, into a flexible space for classes, performances, and events, in recognition of Helen’s interest in art education.
