Dr. Richard Brettell returns to the Taft with an intriguing talk based on the painting Vuillard: Interior with Six Figures (1897). Edouard Vuillard was a painter who whispered when others cried out. His sense of the emotional and psychic complexities of interior space in unmatched in art history, and Interior with Six Figures is the undisputed masterpiece among Vuillard’s “intimist” interiors of the 1890s. Dr. Brettell will walk you through this Parisian apartment of Vuillard’s imagination, assessing its qualities and explicating its mysteries.
